If you've been counting down to a finished construction season in Prairie Village, you've probably been checking the wrong corner. Ask a neighbor near the Shops at 71st and Mission when things get back to normal, and they'll tell you it basically already has. Ask someone half a mile south at 83rd and Mission, and you'll get a different answer entirely, one that involves a specific street name and a date in December.
Both corners have a restaurant opening this fall. Neither corner is fully finished. And they're not on the same schedule, which matters if you're the one deciding where to park on a Friday night.
The corner that's mostly done
The Shops of Prairie Village spent the better part of two years absorbing the fallout from a transformer fire in the basement near the old Macy's in early 2025. That fire set off a construction sequence that eventually blocked entrances near the courtyard, and by the time the dust settled, at least one longtime tenant was down to a handful of customers a day.
Most of that disruption has already worked itself out. Big Grove Brewery, the Iowa-based operation making its first Kansas City metro appearance, opened its 13,000-square-foot taproom on the upper level of the redeveloped Macy's building on May 21. Clairvaux, a women's boutique that spent six years at the Shops at Fairway, has already moved into the former Chico's space at 3944 W. 69th Terrace and is open for business. Pride Cleaners shifted to the east side of the center near Chipotle, which freed up its old spot on Tomahawk Road for French Market to expand.
What's still pending, as of late summer, is GolfTRK. The performance golf brand's flagship location and corporate headquarters, planned for 7068 Mission just west of Big Grove, was still listed as "coming soon" on the center's own tenant directory heading into fall. And the bigger one: Hen House. The grocer is relocating from its current spot at the Shops into the lower level of the same former Macy's building, with a target opening in September. Until that move happens, the current Hen House location keeps running as-is.
So the 71st and Mission corner isn't finished, but it's close. One grocery move and one golf simulator opening stand between now and "done."
"It was not a decision I made lightly," said Sarah Jabbour, owner of the boutique Scoobie, which is leaving the Shops after seven years and closing its online store as well. She pointed to 17 months of construction, first the transformer fire, then a second phase that blocked entrances to the point where some days brought four customers total.
Compare that to what pulled Clairvaux in the opposite direction. Founder Joni Johnson, who also runs a location in Overland Park's Hawthorne Plaza, said the move from Fairway came down to wanting a center with more traffic and more of a community hub feel. One merchant's math said leave. Another's said come. Same intersection, same construction season, opposite conclusions, which tells you the disruption at the Shops was real but temporary rather than a signal that the location itself had gone cold.
A mile south, a different clock is running
Corinth Quarter and Corinth Square sit across Mission Road from each other at 83rd Street, and this corner is dealing with something the Shops isn't: an active city road project, not a private redevelopment.
According to Prairie Village's own construction updates, 83rd Street closed in May from Mission Road all the way to State Line Road for pedestrian safety improvements. The segment from Mission Road to North Wenonga Road, the stretch that fronts Corinth Quarter and Corinth Square directly, was targeted to reopen before school started this fall. The remaining piece, from Wenonga east to State Line, isn't expected to wrap until mid-December, according to the city's newsflash page.
That's the piece nobody selling the "Prairie Village is back" narrative has connected to what's opening on that same corner this season. La Fetta, a sandwich shop known for Boar's Head meats and a permanent-menu "Gloria" (ham, pastrami, Swiss, pickles, mustard, mayo), is targeting a fall opening right at 83rd and Mission, across from Corinth Square. It's a second location for the Bracco family, who already run one in Overland Park and lived in Prairie Village for five years before moving south, so this reads more like a homecoming than an expansion bet.
If you're coming from within the neighborhood, off Wenonga or points west, your stretch of 83rd should be clear by the time La Fetta opens its doors. If you're driving in from the east side of town toward State Line, you're looking at a longer-term closure that runs into the holidays.

Why it helps to know which Hen House someone means
One detail worth clearing up if you're giving or getting directions this fall: Prairie Village has two Hen Houses right now, and they're not interchangeable. The one at Corinth Square, alongside CVS, isn't part of any of this and isn't going anywhere. The one moving is the Shops of Prairie Village location, which is relocating internally from its current spot into the redeveloped Macy's building down the way. If a neighbor tells you Hen House moved, ask which one they mean before you drive to the wrong parking lot.
That distinction is part of a bigger shift worth noticing. Corinth Square, with its steady grocery-and-pharmacy anchor, is increasingly the connective tissue between two corners that are each developing their own personality: the Shops leaning into brewery-and-boutique energy, and Corinth Quarter settling into a quicker, health-forward, dog-friendly lane with Meddys, Body20, Panera, Club Pilates, and an incoming Brookside Barkery & Bath alongside La Fetta.
